Nature of management :Management as an art


Management, art, personal skill, personal judgement, practical knowledge , constructive result.


  •  Management is an art of getting things done through others.
  •  Art is the skilful application of acquired knowledge for the achievement of desired result
  •  Management is essentially considered as an art because manager use his personal skill and knowledge in his day to day activity.
  •  Manager has to perform their functions on the basis of particular situation.
  •  Place and time of applying managerial principles depends on the personal judgement of the manager.
  •  Manager has to apply his knowledge to practical situations to solve the problems.   
  •  Management as an art has to create a congenial atmosphere in the organization.
Management is more application oriented and skill is predominant in nature and hence management is considered as an art.

To generate an idea about to analyse the concepts “management as an art”, to analyse and organise various features of management as an art and draws interferences about nature of management in terms of the dynamic process it involves, through brainstorming, general discussion and group discussion.


Students should have an idea about the term ‘management’ as a process of organisation and it is essential for the accomplishment of organisational goals.

Phase 1 : Introductory Phase
  
 Activity 1 (Brainstorming and general discussion)
           After the routine class room practices, teacher started the class by exhibit pictures of singers, dancers, actors, famous paintings etc.





         

 Then a discussion led by the teacher based on the following key points.
*    Nature of an art
*    Essential features of an art
*    Is there any concept in your subject similar to art.
*    Features of management.
Baesd on the above led points learner reached a consensus that management can be considered us an art because it possess features of an art.



Phase 2 :  Developmental Phase

Activity 1

     Teacher divides the class into 6 groups and gave a task and asked to complete it within stipulated time.

*    Management is a process in which manager use his personal skill for performing managerial skills
*    Manager use his creativity in a universal application
*    Management needs formal education
*    Management has a systematised body of knowledge.
*    Managerial skill can be improved through practice.

Task   
Teacher gives certain features of management in an activity sheet and asks students to identify features of art from that.

Activity 2 (group discussion)

Teacher divides the class into 6 groups and scaffold each group to complete the discussion in the stipulated time.

Topic : Do you think that management is an art? Why?

Phase 3: Concluding Phase

   Activity 1 (Direct instruction)
               Teacher exhibit a chart showing features of management as an art and with the help of that explains the concept ‘management as an art’.

   Activity 2 (Graphic organiser)
Teacher provides a graphic organizer and motivate all students to complete it and offers a prize to a group who finish the task first.
